In fiscal year 2012, Higher Education for Development (HED) marked its 20th anniversary. Over the past two decades, HED has served as a critical link to higher education institutions in addressing international development challenges, and a vital partner to USAID, its Missions and Bureaus, and the U.S. Department of State in support of their strategic objectives to improve the livelihoods of individuals through workforce development educational programs that nurture skills for sustainable economic growth.

This annual report highlights HED’s impressive portfolio of international partnerships and the program’s key roles in strengthening the capacity of higher education faculty, institutions, and communities. Between October 2011 and September 2012, HED managed 70 partnerships in 37 countries involving 83 host-country and 57 U.S. institutions. These partnerships bring forth innovative courses, new degree programs, advanced teaching methodology, improved access to education, and the engagement of thought leaders at local, regional and national levels.
